Step beyond the gates and into the stories that shaped a community.
The Sharon Historical Society, in partnership with the Oakwood Cemetery Association, invites you to our Oakwood Cemetery: The Stories Within Tours — an unforgettable morning of history, heritage, and local legend.
The program begins with a brief welcome and orientation at the Veteran’s Bandstand before guests are guided in small groups to thoughtfully selected locations throughout the cemetery grounds. At each stop, a historic interpreter will bring the past to life, sharing the compelling biographies of the individuals laid to rest there.
This year’s theme, “The Best of the Best,” spotlights the names that helped define the Shenango Valley — community leaders, cultural icons, veterans, and figures whose lives have become part of local folklore. Featured stops may include the Buhl Chapel and mausoleum, Billy Whitla “The Kidnapped Boy,” the legendary Gypsy Queen, prominent family mausoleums, distinguished veterans, and other fascinating individuals whose legacies continue to resonate today.
Each attendee will receive a FREE commemorative booklet highlighting tour locations and additional historical insights about Oakwood Cemetery. The Sharon Historical Society will also have an information tent with memberships and select publications available for purchase.
The tour will involve approximately 1.5 miles of walking on rolling, uneven terrain. The estimated length of the walk is nearly 1.5-2 hours. Rest stops are limited. Be aware that participants may be on their feet for the entire event. Please wear appropriate shoes and attire for the weather. These tours are FREE and OPEN TO ALL. No advanced reservations needed.
The event will be at Oakwood Cemetery, 600 North Oakland Ave. Sharon, PA 16146 on Saturday, October 3, 2026 at 10:00 am.
Volunteers are still needed! If you are interested in serving as a group escort or assisting with the event, please contact the Sharon Historical Society at: taylorgalaska@gmail.com
Come discover the stories within — and meet the voices of Sharon’s past.

Unfortunately, we hosted Greg, an acclaimed composer and fantastic Jazz saxophonist, back on Dec. 14, 2025, the day the blizzard hit that permanently blanketed our area for most of the winter. Most people wouldn’t leave their homes, but those very few who did were in for a treat. This is the redemption show! Greg will be accompanied by a trio of fantastic Jazz musicians, and there will be a bonus opening set by the YSU Jazz Combo, directed by Glenn Schaft of the Dana School of Music.

Join the Sharon Historical Society for a special evening commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 Armistice with the official release of The Great War in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the newest book
Join the Sharon Historical Society for a special evening commemorating the anniversary of the 1918 Armistice with the official release of The Great War in Sharon, Pennsylvania, the newest book by local historian and author Taylor Galaska, on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 6:00 pm at the Sharon City Building, 155 West Connelly Boulevard, Sharon, PA 16146.
The date was selected intentionally. On November 11, 1918, after more than four years of devastating conflict, the guns fell silent on the Western Front. The first Armistice Day marked the end of the Great War and became a day of remembrance for those who served and sacrificed. More than a century later, this program honors that legacy by exploring Sharon’s own wartime experience.
Drawing upon extensive research, historic photographs, newspapers, and archival records, Galaska will examine how the First World War reshaped Sharon and the Shenango Valley. The lecture will trace the region’s transformation from a thriving industrial community into an essential contributor to the Allied war effort, highlighting the roles of Sharon Steel, Carnegie Steel, and Savage Arms Company in wartime production. It will also explore the generosity of Frank and Julia Buhl, the patriotic efforts of local citizens through Liberty Loan campaigns and Red Cross work, the sacrifices of area servicemen, and the profound impact of the 1918 influenza pandemic on families at home.
More than a history of military service, The Great War in Sharon, Pennsylvania, published by the Sharon Historical Society through Shenango Heritage Press, tells the story of a community united by duty, resilience, and sacrifice during one of the defining events of the twentieth century.
This book represents more than two years of research, writing, and archival investigation, a project that began in February 2024 to uncover and preserve Sharon’s remarkable Great War story.
This program is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Following the FREE lecture event on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 6:00 pm at the Sharon City Building, 155 West Connelly Boulevard, Sharon, PA 16146, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase signed copies of the newly released book and meet the author. A Q&A will also be at the end of the lecture program.
Join us as we commemorate Armistice Day by remembering the people, industries, and community spirit that carried Sharon through the Great War and ensured that their stories would not be forgotten.
