Mercer County’s Best Places For A Day of Fun

With the spring weather starting to pick up, it’s time to relieve your cabin fever and get out of the house for a day of fun! Mercer County has many beautiful parks with areas that are perfect for kite flying and many other outdoor adventures.

Maurice K. Goddard State Park

Looking for plenty of room to fly a kite or enjoy other outdoor fun? The sprawling 2,856-acre Maurice K. Goddard State Park is a great place for outdoor family fun. The park features a 12.2-mile paved hiking and biking trail along with many recreational activities that are perfect for enjoying the fresh spring weather.

This park also features the 1,860-acre Lake Wilhelm that makes for a great fishing spot. Fly a kite, have a picnic and enjoy the beautiful scenery and a variety of recreational opportunities at Maurice K. Goddard State Park.

Pymatuning State Park

Since Pymatuning State Park is the largest park in Pennsylvania based on acreage, you will find endless space to enjoy outdoor activities at the park.  With three campgrounds, you can plan a weekend getaway with your family to enjoy all the outdoor fun the park has to offer or take a day trip to enjoy the scenery, the fish hatchery, as well as hiking, picnic areas, and fishing at Pymatuning State Park.

Brandy Springs Park

If you are looking for stunning scenery for a spring picnic or as a backdrop for your outdoor games, Brandy Springs Park is the place to go! Take a stroll through this beautiful park and enjoy the ample space that is available for kite flying, frisbee games, playing catch, and more! This park is the ideal spring destination for family fun and relaxation!

Brandy Springs Park is located at 233 New Wilmington Road, Mercer, PA 16137.

Buhl Farm Park

Buhl Farm Park has so much to offer for a family outing. The park features a one-of-a-kind free 9-hole golf course, as well as a driving range guests can enjoy along with over 300 acres of cultural amenities and recreational activities. The park also offers free tennis courts for friendly family competition. If you want to get your sweat on, the park features a .9-mile fitness trail featuring 16 workout stations or if you are looking to relax, cast a line in the 7-acre lake. There are also four playgrounds and four picnic shelters you and your family can use to enjoy endless fun and share a picnic lunch together!

Buhl Farm Park is located at 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Grove City Community Park

The Grove City Community Park is a lovely park full of endless fun for you and your family. With tennis courts, picnic areas, and a playground, as well as plenty of kite-flying space, this is the perfect spot for a day of family fun in Mercer County. Enjoy a picnic lunch after a day of outdoor adventure and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Grove City Community Park.

Riverside Park

Whether you are looking to play some outdoor games, or want to step up your adventure with kayaking or hiking, Riverside Park is the place to go. This park was established in 1911 from a donation of 20 acres of land from J.C Brackin and serves as a true gem for outdoor activity and family fun!  Enjoy the scenic views of the forest on a hike or have a relaxing picnic with friends and family at this great community park.

Riverside Park is located at 45 Alan Avenue, Greenville, PA 16125.

Sharpsville Area Recreation Park

If you are looking for a little bit of history, you can visit Sharpsville Area Recreation Park, where you can visit the Frederick J. Raisch log cabin, built before 1810. This is believed to be one of Mercer County’s oldest structures. This cabin features a single room with an opening on every side except where the stone chimney is located. The loft can be reached by a ladder.

You can also visit Canal Lock # 10, a guard lock on the Beaver and Erie Extension Canal from 1840 – 1871, which is the only extant lock located in northwestern Pennsylvania. A short foot trail passes through the walls of the former canal lock that makes for a great leisurely walk and gives you a great view of the canal lock.

The park also has a pavilion with picnic tables for a great spot to stop for lunch. If you are looking for a fun place to play and learn, the Sharpsville Area Recreation Park is the place to go!
