While many people have experienced an interruption to their summer plans in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, you can still make the most of your summer in Mercer County. Our parks and other recreational areas are open and ready for visitors to enjoy.

From camping, biking, hiking and boating, to beautiful scenery that is the perfect backdrop for a picnic, Mercer County is a great destination to enjoy the great outdoors and make lasting memories with friends and family!

State/Federal Corps Parks

Maurice K. Goddard State Park

Love to fish or looking for a place to spot wildlife with your family? The 2,856-acre Maurice K. Goddard State Park is a great stop for an outdoor adventure in Mercer County. This park features the 1,860-acre Lake Wilhelm that makes for the perfect fishing spot. The park also features a 12.2-mile paved hiking and biking trail along with many recreational activities that are perfect for summer. The park also features a large lake and wetlands along with fields and forests that are full of diverse wildlife where you can see animals such as eagles and waterfowl.

Maurice K. Goddard State Park is located at 684 Lake Wilhelm Rd., Sandy Lake, PA 16145.

Pymatuning State Park

If you are searching for a one-stop-shop for outdoor recreation, then look no further! Serving as the largest park in Pennsylvania based on acreage, Pymatuning State Park is an outdoor enthusiast’s ultimate destination. With three campgrounds, a fish hatchery, as well as hiking, swimming, picnic areas, and fishing, the outdoor fun is endless!

Pymatuning State Park is located at 2660 Williamsfield Rd., Jamestown PA 16134.

Shenango River Lake

Shenango River Lake is located in the suburban Shenango Valley and is a part of the flood control system that is operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers for the Upper Ohio and Beaver Rivers.

This lake is a great destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts, providing visitors with opportunities for warm water fishing, boating with six boat ramps available, canoeing, and water sports. In addition, the lake also offers camping, hiking, and picnicking areas as well as scenic views that are perfect for nature photography.

Trails

Upper Shenango  River Water Trail

This trail provides 23 miles of scenic and easy paddling.  The water trail starts at Pymatuning State Park, and running through the towns of Jamestown and Greenville, ends at the Army Corps of Engineers facility at Shenango River Lake.  Carried Away Outfitters and Pymatuning Rentals provide kayak and canoe rental services on this water trail.  Carried Away outfitters also offer bike rentals for scenic biking trails in the area.

Hell’s Hollow Wildlife Adventure Trail

The Hell’s Hollow Wildlife Adventure Trail is the perfect place for history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts alike. You can choose to hike the trail or rent a trail buggy to explore the trail. This trail is 4 miles long, featuring historical, environmental, and wildlife trails to explore.

You can enjoy bird watching, catch sight of deer and turkey, take in the beauty of waterfalls, or observe beaver dams. On the trail, you will also see the Hell’s Hollow Farm featuring an old stone house built in 1824. You will also have the chance to wander through acres of Historic Indian hunting grounds. Bring your camera to capture the beauty, wildlife, and history of this beautiful trail!

Shenango River Trail

1.3 miles completed of a proposed 10.5 mile trail.  The trail is crushed limestone and is comfortable for walking, running, biking and cross country skiing.   A part of the trail travels around Riverside Park.

The Shenango River Trail starts on Main St. in Greenville and ends on Porter Rd on Rt. 58.

Trout Island Trail

Trout Island Trail in Sharpsville is a 2.6 mile paved scenic bicycle trail that follows the Shenango River, through low swamp land ending just short of Shenango Lake.  The trail provides spectacular view of the dam and occasional sightings of eagles and other wild life.

Community Parks

Brandy Springs Park

Brandy Springs Park features beautiful scenery to enjoy a picnic, play outdoor games, or take a walk throughout the park. With a swimming pool and plenty of space for all to enjoy, Brandy Springs Park is an ideal destination for fun and relaxation for you and your family.

Brandy Springs Park is located at 233 New Wilmington Road, Mercer, PA 16137.

Buhl Farm Park

With over 300 acres of cultural amenities and recreational activities, Buhl Farm Park is a beautiful place to spend the day. A unique feature of the park is its free 9-hole golf course, which is the only one of its kind in the country! The park also has a driving range for guests to enjoy. If golf isn’t your sport, you can enjoy their eight free tennis courts, a .9 mile fitness trail featuring 16 workout stations, and an outdoor pool. For anglers, there is a 7-acre lake for fishing as well as four playgrounds and four picnic shelters where you can unwind with family and friends for a delicious picnic meal!

Buhl Farm Park is located at 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Grove City Community Park

The Grove City Community Park features playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas, and a swimming pool for you and your family to enjoy. Take a dip in the pool and refuel with a picnic lunch on the scenic property.

Riverside Park

Established in 1911 from a donation of 20 acres of land from J.C Brackin, Riverside Park is the perfect place to spend the day with family and friends. Whether you want to take your kayak out on the water, hike through the beautiful forest throughout the park, or play games and picnic, Riverside Park is a great place for outdoor recreation.

Sharpsville Area Recreation Park

This park features a short trail, pavilion with picnic tables and two significant points of interest: Canal Lock # 10, a guard lock on the Erie Extension Canal from 1840 – 1871 and the Frederick  J. Raisch log cabin, built before 1810 and believed to be one of Mercer County’s oldest structures.

More Outdoor Fun

Keystone Safari

Keystone Safari is the area’s newest attraction with fun for the whole family. Visitors can expect to feed and interact with over 100 animals, including local celebrities, the reticulated giraffe family. For those who prefer thrills, visitors can conquer our beginner or intermediate zip-line adventure courses. Coming soon is our Safari Tour bus rides. Visitors will board our open-air buses for a one-hour tour to see multiple regional exhibit areas where many larger species of animals will roam in a natural setting. Also, don’t expect to stay at home in the colder months, seasonal holiday attractions are planned for each year.

North Star Marina

The only full-service marina on the Shenango Lake.  Offered are wet and dry slips, service, rentals, fuel, refreshments and more.

Pymatuning Deer Park

Looking for a fun place where your family can interact with animals and enjoy the great outdoors? Bring them to Pymatuning Deer Park! This park features 200 animals on display that visitors can pet and feed. After you’ve fed the animals, you can enjoy a snack from the snack or picnic lunch in their picnic area. The park also has a gift shop, as well as a western town with pony rides and train rides to enjoy for a truly unique outdoor experience.

Tribute/Historic

Avenue of 444 Flags and War on Terror Veterans Memorial: located in Hermitage, PA.  You will see the breathtaking site of 444 flags flowing in the breeze in honor of the 53 Americans that were held hostage in Iran from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981. Also at this site the War on Terror Veterans Memorial honors military men and women who lost their life in the War on Terror.

Kidd’s Mill Covered Bridge: built in 1868 and restored in 1990, Kidd’s Mill is the last covered bridge in Mercer County, and the only remaining bridge in PA with an all-wood truss design.  Its 120-foot length is open to hikers and bikers
