Mercer County is rich with scenic views, outdoor adventure, family fun, and historical attractions. The Avenue of 444 Flags and War on Terror Veteran Memorial is an amazing tribute honoring America’s veterans.
Located in Hermitage PA, the Avenue features 444 flags flowing in the breeze. Tom Flynn created the Avenue of 444 Flags to “mark time” for the 52 Americans who were held hostage in Iran from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981. In 1980, on the 100th day of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, Flynn had 100 flags hoisted along the avenue that leads to the cemetery to bring attention to the situation. One flag was raised every day until the hostages were released on January 21, 1981. They were released 444 days after they were taken hostage.
The War on Terror Veterans Memorial is also located at this site. Featured are 12 steel and glass monuments, 12 feet tall by 4 feet wide, in a circle around a beautiful fountain, and surrounded by the Avenue of 444 Flags. The first 2 feet of the towers are stainless steel; above are five glass panels, each 2 feet high by 4 feet wide. Etched in the dark glass are the names of all military personnel who have died in the War on Terror since 1975.
The Avenue of 444 Flags and War on Terror Veterans Memorial is located at 2619 East State St. Hermitage, PA 16148.
