Shenango River Lakes Eagles Fest Returns for The Second Time

The army Corps. of Engineers, partnering with the Shenango River watchers, brings you the Shenango River Lakes Eagle Fest. Whether you are an avid bird watcher or would like to simply catch sight of a bald eagle, Mercer County is the place to do so! The Eagle Fest is a free public event where you can track and document eagle activity at the Shenango Lake.

The event will be held on January 7th, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chestnut Run swim Beach at 500 Saranac Drive in Transfer, PA. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about bald eagles and possibly observe bald eagles during their self-guided tour around the lake.

According to Bill Spring, the Resource Manager at the Corps Shenango River Lake, they participate in a national survey each year where they travel around the lake and count bald eagles, submitting the numbers to a national database. This survey Is conducted to track the bald eagle population to determine how well they are doing based the federal and state laws that are in place to protect the bald eagles.

Visitation to the lake is lower in the winter, so with this event, Spring says they hope to bring more people to the lake so they can enjoy the public lands.

Dressing warmly for the weather, along with hiking boots is encouraged. Park rangers will be available to help locate bald eagles and answer questions.

To learn more about this event, call the Shenango ranger station, call 724-646-1124.
