Discover Local History: Underground Railroad Tour and Juneteenth Dinner Theatre at Gibson House
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth has grown into a nationwide observance honoring the end of slavery in the United States.
The day is often commemorated with educational events, community gatherings, music, and food, offering an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of slavery, celebrate African American culture, and recognize the ongoing pursuit of equality.
Visitors to Mercer County, PA, have the opportunity to explore a significant part of American history through the Underground Railroad & History Tour at Gibson House and a special Juneteenth Dinner Theatre event in June. Both experiences offer insight into the region’s historical contributions to the abolitionist movement and the Civil War.
Underground Railroad & History Tour
The Underground Railroad & History Tour at Gibson House provides visitors with a guided look at how one Mercer County family helped enslaved individuals seek freedom in the years leading up to the Civil War. The home, originally owned by Dr. and Mrs. Gibson, was designed with 11 concealed elements to assist those escaping slavery.
In addition to touring the house, visitors will learn about:
Pennsylvania’s role in the Civil War and the Underground Railroad
