Where to Camp in Mercer County

Whether you are looking to tent camp or bring your RV or pop-up, there are a variety of places to stay in Mercer County nestled in the beautiful parks or located right near the Shenango River Lake. When planning your camping trip, consider these great campsites:

Mercer/Grove City KOA Holiday

This campground is located minutes from the Grove City Premium Outlets and features large 50-amp pull-through RV sites, tent sites, patio sites, and log cabin rentals. This campground also features a heated swimming pool and playground, as well as a fully stocked camp store and free Wi-Fi.

Shenango River Lake Campgrounds

Located on the Shenango River Lake, one of the 16 flood control projects in the Pittsburgh District, the scenic Shenango River Lake Campgrounds has 330 sites available, with many of them featuring showers, restrooms, electric hookups, dump stations, and playgrounds. There is a variety of opportunities for fishing, hiking, picnicking, and more!

The Shenango River Lake Campgrounds is located at 2442 Kelly Road, Hermitage, PA 16148-7308.

Goddard Park Vacationland Campground

The Goddard Park Vacationland Campground is one of the largest campgrounds in Western PA, boasting 85 acres and 602 level, spacious pull-through, and back-in campsites offering fun for everyone at any camping level. They also offer cabins for rent and free Wi-Fi, along with tennis, horseshoe pits, bocce, and planned activities on the campground.

The Goddard Park Vacationland Campground is located at 867 Georgetown Rd., Sandy Lake, PA 16145.

Picnicking

Pack up some sandwiches or other picnic-friendly foods and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Mercer County. Enjoy a picnic lakeside at Shenango River Lake Campgrounds or utilize the available picnic tables at the other campsites in Mercer County. With beautiful scenery and convenient picnicking areas, the campgrounds in the area offer a great place to unwind after a hike or a during a break from fishing.

Hiking

Camp Wilhelm campground is located nearby a 12 ½ mile bike and walking trail, perfect for avid hikers or those just looking for a leisurely stroll.

Those staying at the Shenango River Lake Campgrounds can hike the walking trail at the lake. The Seth Myers Trail is located at the Mahaney Day Use area and features a variety of natural discoveries to be made. The Coonie trail is a self-guided trail located right in the campground at the amphitheater, showcasing the unique habitat of the lake. Information panels are located for your enjoyment at key points of interest.

If you’re staying at Rocky Spring Campground, you can enjoy the walking trail located on the campground.

Fishing 

Campgrounds in Mercer County feature a variety of fishing opportunities for beginners and seasoned anglers to enjoy:

  • Shenango River Lake offers great fishing for crappie, bass, walleye, channel catfish, and more.
  • Rose Point Park Campground features a stocked trout stream for anglers to enjoy.
  • Farma Family Campground features a fishing lake for campers to enjoy during their stay.
  • Located adjacent to Goddard Park Vacationland is Maurice K. Goddard State Park. Within the park is 1,680-acre Lake Wilhelm, a warm water fishery where an angler can fish for Largemouth bass, Walleye, Crappie, Muskellunge, Bluegill, and more!
  • Rocky Spring Campground features a catch-and-release fishing pond on site.
  • Camp Wilhelm is located next to Lake Wilhelm and Maurice K. Goddard State Park, with a variety of fishing opportunities.
Boating 

With many of the campgrounds near Lake Wilhelm and the Shenango River Lake, you can enjoy a day of boating, either for fishing or for leisure with family and friends. North Star Marina, located on the Shenango River Lake in Clark, PA, offers boat and personal watercraft rentals for a day of fun in the sun!

Canoeing and Kayaking

If canoeing or kayaking is more your style, you’re in luck! Mercer County features beautiful waterways that are perfect for kayaking/canoeing. For your kayak and canoe rentals, you can visit:

Pymatuning Deer Park

Visitors can pet and feed over 200 animals the park has on display. The park features several species of deer, as well as a large variety of domestic and exotic animals, including camels, black bears, African lions, and Siberia tigers. You can picnic at the park and enjoy the Kiddle Zoo, where children can get up close to baby animals and domestic farm animals.
