The Sharon Historical Society will host free History Walks during WaterFire Sharon, PA on Saturday, July 27 at 10 am, 12 pm/Noon, and 2 pm. These History Walks will focus on downtown Sharon’s historic North Flats area. Tour guides Brian Kepple and John Zavinski will lead groups throughout this downtown section, offering interesting anecdotes of this area’s past, complemented with a free collectible booklet of stories and photographs.

“Lots of people have such a deep connection to the North Flats area downtown. There is so much history packed into this section of the city, from businesses, factories, homes, it was truly ‘the place to be’” Society Board President and Marketing Director, Taylor Galaska, said. “These History Walks will showcase many memories. We are proud to highlight this area’s rich history.”

The History Walks will be approximately 1.5 hours over a 1.6-mile route of mostly flat terrain, sometimes uneven. Nearly the entire route is shaded by trees. Stops include the Shenango Valley Water Company building, Sharon’s various post offices, a history of floods, schools and the Penn State Shenango campus, various sacred spaces, industrial sites, Yazvac Place (named after Sharon patrolman Joesph Yazvac, killed in the line of duty), Harold Brest (bank robber, kidnapper, and unsuccessful Alcatraz escapee), railroad and the V bridges, and the former Elks Lodge.

These free History Walks are open to the public and do not require reservations or tickets. They will depart from the greenspace next to the Penn State University welcome sign at 32 East Silver Street, Sharon, PA 16146 on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Due to the crowds expected at WaterFire, we have moved the tour times so our group can have the best experience possible. Tours this year will be 10:00 am, Noon/12:00 pm, and 2:00 pm. Parking can be found at several lots nearby at Penn State, on-street parking, and the Downtown Sharon/Primary Health Network Parking Garage. All parking is free.
